Photovoltaic
One of the largest and most up to date solar systems was installed on the roofs of the ufaFabrik buildings in 1997. It can generate up to 53 kilowatt per hour of energy when the sun shines. The surplus of generated electricity is channeled into the public power supply system. The significant positive environmental impacts are as follows: conventional generated electricity also generates about 0,9 kilograms of CO2 per kilowatt-hour. The solar system generates about 37.000 kilowatt-hours each year and therefore saves around 33 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere.
Since installing the solar system, the ufaFabrik only requires about half as much energy from the power supply system as before, which is a significant improvement of the amount of generated pollution.
In 2000, the ufaFabrik initiated a research project regarding solar energy. Part of this project was the installation of another system which consists of several units with different modules, cells, inverters, circuit technologies and tracking systems and generates 20 kilowatt-hours.
