Educating vulnerable youngsters in the arts ...
... and creative industries in Dar es Salaam
With a first workshop in June 2013, the three-year EU-project began. The Big Wheel brought coaches from Germany, France, and Cambodia as well as over 60 children from the Babawatoto Children’s Centre of Parapanda Theatre.
The BABA WATOTO Children’s Centre is located in a socially deprived area of Dar es Salaam. Every day, children and young people of different ages come together to put all the possibilities of percussion, and dance to use, and take part in theatre courses. The director of the centre has it his goal to take children and teens out of the circle of drugs and violence by introducing them to the arts.
The musicians from the band Terra Brasilis gave workshops in Samba Reggae percussion, and a coach from the ufaFabrik Circus gave workshops in acrobatics. In the end, there was a 40 minute show at the BABA WATOTO Centre, which participants were welcomed to continue and expand upon.
The Goethe-Institute of Tanzania coordinated this EU-Project in partnership with Para Panda Theatre Lab Trust, Dar es Salaam and the International Cultural Center ufaFabrik, Berlin. More info on the website Fit for Life
